Very new to ubuntu (and other Linux). Love playing Neverwinter free MMO, so followed instructions in http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/neverwinter-free-mmo-guide.170/. Worked once, thereafter I upgraded the graphics dirver and since then only chrases, first at Cryptic Launcher, then at installation of Arc. Anybody any idea? Changed driver graphic card back but was no help. Even tried Crossover also a distaster. Basically do manual install tried wine 1.6 flavors and 1.7 as well installed 1.7.10 to avoid having to install IE, did PO install for corefronts, tahoma and directx9. Each time from scratch in POL throw away virtual disc uninstall wine and the install again, etc.

I have updated the Neverwinter guide last week. You may want to try it again because now you don't need IE8 any more and Arc runs beautifully.
check it out: Neverwinter Guide

I think you are on the right path...
Can you play any other games?
What new card did you get?

Thank you, beautiful guide. Changed to mint 16, instead of Ubuntu, now it is working, it was crashing after I updated the driver to recommended setting have Nvdia Getforce 9400 GT (in ubuntu precise). Have slow internet speed so loading the 5 Gb from Neverwinter takes 5 hours (2 Mbit connection which translates to 18 Mbytes per minute), so each change is done overnight. Included POL liberary video driver so I could verify with regedit that graphic card was correct in Wine. Need better graphics card fps is around 30 with settings on lowest (50%).

Awesome! I've heard Mint 17 is going to be a really good release... so look forward to upgrading.

I have a GeForce 550 Ti and still have some frame rate problems. Probably because I play at the highest settings.

Sucks that your internet is slow because there will be updates for Neverwinter and its usually 2+ Gigs. Sucks, but its such a cool game that its totally worth it.

So what now, after Module 4, Tyranny of dragons? Doesn't work anymore. Frustrating as I *just* got Neverwinter installed and running practically perfect.

I'm no POL or wine expert by any means, so I'm partially at the mercy of more edified folk than myself.

No problem. Just post up what we need, according to the forum rules:

computer specs

linux version

debug output

graphics card

etc.

Without that stuff, we simply cannot troubleshoot your issue without it just being guesses.

It looks like the new release had some major changes. The devs appear to actually be helping, though nothing is promised before the weekend ends. It also looks like it is affecting both linux and Mac users.

Great (sarcasm)...

Guess I'll have to download it again and see what changes affect Wine.  Please update us here when the devs have made some corrections to the new problems

Is this a problem for Linux/Wine only or does it affect Windows as well?

It appears that both linux/mac wine has been impacted. No one has been able to get it to work under wine yet that I have found. There has been references to windows not being able to run it either, but I have personally run it on a windows 8 laptop after the Mod (no tweaking necessary).  Here is the first post from Crypticcliff, a graphics dev:----

I'll try to look into it, assuming they let me take the time to do it, but there probably won't be a solution this weekend. :[

As always, remember to run with 2>/dev/null to reduce all the error spam from the raw input system (this error output actually slows down your frame rate).

Good luck!

and then today a Game producer posted this -------

Thanks Cliff for working on your own time to resolve this issue!

I logged into the preview server successfully tonight. It hung at the Neverwinter load screen for a good ten minutes but I got in. I moved around a bit, fought a few demons, things seemed to work fine. about three minutes of play on high graphics settings before logging out. That appears to be good news for the official patch, I'm guessing for thursday.

Great!  Thanks for the update.

I've had it hang on the logo for at least 15 minutes before

I was actually just working on a script tonight for Star Trek Online via Arc. I got it working very well. A little slow, but totally playable.

@booman - I actually get ALSA underruns on this (though I am working toward a solution. Any thoughts? PM me.). haha. Right after I say that I NEVER get them, boom. :) I love 'puterz. :p

I'd be very interested in setting up Nevewinter on my system using booman's guide.

Before proceeding I'd like to know if the available guide works with "Elemental Evil" content.

I'm running Debian Sid, Linux kernel 3.16-1, nvidia driver 346.59-1.

Current version of Play on Linux is 4.2.6-1 in official Debian sid repository.

Don't use the guide. There is already an automated installer that works fine without having to do everything manually. You don't need Arc either.

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-2505-Neverwinter_Online.html

The guide is not a part of POL. That is a 3rd party guide. Always check our supported software section first before trying to do a manual install. It is a million times easier. :)

If there is something extra to install for the "Elemental Evil" stuff, you can use the "Run a .exe in this virtual drive" option in the Misc. Tab in the Configuration Window. If it is installed in-game, then it should just be available.

I would assume Elemental Evil would automatically be downloaded as an update when logging into the Neverwinter launcher...  let us know if you figure out how to install it.  I'm definitely interested

I don't play it enough. How is Elemental Evil normally installed? That would be awesome if it was just an update to the client, as it would just work with no extra effort. My stupid a$$ deleted my ~./PlayOnLinux folder when testing something the other day, so now I have to reinstall it. hahaha. :\
