Hello, i installed kubuntu on my machine and im really liking it. I've gotten everything running, except counter strike: source. I play it daily, and if I could get it running smoothly I would switch to Linux completely :)
I got everything working with PlayOnLinux, but the framerates are terrible. in the 15fps range, not playable at all even with lowest setting. On windows, ran great with max setting.
my spec:
NvidiaGeForce 6800gs
Intel Pentium 4 3.0ghz
1.5GB ram

You have got Compiz Fusion or Kwin enabled. Please disable this desktop effect and you should see increase in your fps. Post here for others if it helped you.

Getting rid of kwiz and compiz got me a good increase in fps,
but even in very low graphics settings im still dropping to around 30fps.

Check if situation changed after each point.

1) check if you use latest Wine release (that is Wine-1.1.19)
Here is explained how to install Wine-1.1.19

2) set in registry

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]
"VideoMemorySize"="YourVideoMemorySize"

You can do this by this plugin

3) read entry in AppDB about Half Life 2 on www.winehq.org

4) check if you've got latest stable drivers for your gpu (that is 180.51 version)
