handle more installation of the same program

Ok I'm starting understanding how playonlinux works, now I need a suggestion. I have bought aliens versus predator classic 2000 from steam, but it has trouble with mouse I need change different wine versions but I would like keep all my installations safe.
How do you plan to handle this kind of situations? I guess I need install steam again and install the game in this new wineprefix and make attemps. Should I rename my installation Steam1 and install Steam as one new, or can I (as I prefer) install a new steam in a custom wineprefix like steam1 keeping my links working?
