Slackware 13.37 64 bit
Assassin's Creed II Steam version
My desktop is xfce

Before I start on this, I just want to say that Shaiya works with POL, and I had despaired of ever getting it working. Very impressive!

Not so lucky with Assassin's Creed II (AC2). Install works but you have to terminate steam to get it to complete. On startup it complains about not finding the launcher. I've seen this before, and you fix it by removing the c:\\Program Files\\Ubisoft\\ directory, and then running the installer directly from c:\\Program Files\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\assassin's creed 2\\redist\\. This is not an AC2 problem - this appears to be a UBISoft problem.

So anyhow, I get past the can't find installer error, and it goes to "checking for updates" and immediately goes to "A SERVICE IS UNAVAILABLE. Ubisoft services are unavailable at the momement. Please try again later.". I gather from all the complaints I've seen while researching this that the UBI Soft DRM server is basically cr*p, but this never goes past this point.

Any ideas how to get past this point? I do own a legal copy of the game, purchased through Steam. I'm seriously considering downloading a cracked version, but would rather get the legal version running if possible.

I got it to work by using a hack/crack that disables the online service requirement. This shows that it can indeed be made to work, but for some reason the non-hacked version fails to contact the UBISoft servers. I own a legal copy, so I don't have a problem using the hack.

Is this working for anyone? I'm wondering if the failure I'm seeing is a problem with my install/config?
