Hi,

I've successfully installed Steam through PoL and one game I own through Steam as a test. The test game is Driftmoon. After that I tried to install Lord of the Rings Online through Steam. It did the download properly and installed the game into the Steam Library. However when it launches, as expected, the launcher doesn't work.

I see there is an install script for PoL for LotRO, but how do I execute the script while the game was installed through Steam? I have other Steam games too, like Bioshock and Dragon Age, so I'm curious is there a proper install sequence to get these working through Steam?

I did do some searching around, but couldn't find an answer to this question.

I'm assuming Driftmoon ran ok?

Just click "install" and search for your game.  Select the game and click "Install" at the bottom to run a script. Steam, libraries and Wine should install for you.

A couple things to remember:

  • Make sure you have the proprietary video drivers installed for your video card (Intel, AMD, Nvidia)
  • Make sure you have 32-bit libraries installed for your Distro (multi-arch, ia32-libs)

Thanks for the response. Just for info, I'm using Mint 17 with Cinnamon desktop. I do use the proprietary Nvidia drivers.

Driftmoon does run. It was my test install because it's the smallest download.

Since then I've successfully installed Torchlight 2, Agarest: Generations of War, Bioshock, Final Fantasy VII, and Valdis Story: Abyssal City.

I've done most of my testing with Torchlight 2 which, so far, has run flawlessly.

My install method has just been to use the Steam installer. The only odd behavior is that games often want to reinstall DirectX or some dependency.

I forgot to update the LotRO install experience. I couldn't get it to work through the Steam install. I decided to have it install through its own prefix as Windows7. I used extra install suggestions (IE8, MSXML4, CoreFonts, VCRun2008, D3DDx9, .NET 1.1 and the SP1, .NET 3.5 and service pack, and .NET4.0).

The patcher client is very spotty. If it can connect to Akamai services it seems to run okay. If not then it usually crashes. The game client itself runs okay, mostly without hitches, except it froze when I tried to alt-tab out of the game.

Whent the client was having trouble connecting I installed winhttp (after reading some thread or post somewhere) and a couple other things. I have deleted this prefix and will only add these other bits. I'm not sure if any of the wine settings configuring rendering are important or not and since I don't understand most of them, I left them alone.

I'll try and report back with my success or failure.

Awesome, sounds like you have a good handle on things.  I bet installing dotnet 3.5 was fun with the whole ptrace thing...

Yes, please post your success.  I have not tried Lord of the Rings Online myself, but I have had success with a bunch of other MMO's like Royal Quest, Neverwinter, Wakfu, Drakensang, Path of Exile

I seem to have run into a snag. I was getting some consistent crashes. Research also showed that .net isn't required for the LotRO patcher anymore. It was rewritten in QT to support an official OSX client.

I'm doing more research now at their site to find out how other LotRO Linux users have configured their wine packages to make the game run.

I'll report back. I also joined your site booman and will report there as well.

Ugh, don't say "Qt"

I've been having problems with Qt 5 and Drakensang just this weekend.

Looks like this is a widespread problem arising... Wine and Qt are having compatibility issue on multiple fronts:

  • E.A. Origins
  • Battle.net
  • Drakensang thinclient.exe

I hope this isn't your problem either...

I'm not sure now. LotRO and TERA both don't work so I'm stepping back from them until I can do more research. I have other online games I play (Neverwinter, STO, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2). There are also native Linux games and my single player Linux and Windows games so there is a lot to do. I just enjoy the challenge of making things work.

These are the games I want to figure out and make work: LotRO, TERA, EQ2, Landmark, Firefall, Eldevin Steam release, SW:TOR, Firefall, Project Gorgon.

Ooh, I am currently playing Firefall in Windows.  I've thought about testing it in PlayOnLinux as well. Have you tried it yet?

I hope this Qt5 thing gets worked out with Wine. that would really help a few games that are updating from Qt4 to Qt5

So far Firefall, LotRO, and EQ2 do not work through wine Steam. I've tried adding a couple of external fixes described in winehq, but they didn't work and the problems are beyond me. TERA isn't working yet, but I think it is possible.

On the other hand both Neverwinter and STO work great through Steam with no extra hassle.

Awesome!  This is my experience as well.  Some games work GREAT, other games work but have bugs and then a few games refuse to work at all.

Try creating a new virtual drive and copy the entire Firefall folder from Steam/SteamApps/Common into the drive_c

Then make a shortcut to Firefall.exe

Launch it with PlayOnLinux by clicking Debug and it will show any errors.  I haven't tried this myself yet, but plan to pretty soon

I actually run STO all of the time, though I do find the performance lacking a bit (I have a fairly powerful system with Nvidia cards running proprietary drivers). I just run it through manual installs with no extras and it just works. Thoug, I have not tried any of those through Steam.
