i did a test in virtualbox - i can confirm that when i did the install of qjack which also install jackd & jackd2 you get a pop up box asking if you would like to enable realtime - i must have skipped this box by mistake and forwarded the install unchecked - in doing so it names the file - audio.conf.disable

i tested both ways and if checked for realtime it does name it audio.conf

so it appears even if later on when setting up jack you choose not to use real time it is still better to choose it as an option when installing jackd

hope this helps anyone who may have this issue

There Now appears to be an issue with Mint 18 - 64 Bit

i can get audio via the web or vlc or other app with jack running and they all appear in the pavucontrol when playing

Ableton however does not and it seems to lock up the system, im not sure if its a 18 issue or POL i suspect it to be a POL issue as all other apps play on Mint os and the the only one that doesnt is Ableton Via POL

it doesnt even appear in the play back section of Pavu

Nothing has changed in the setting as far as i can see - wine asio is installed , i am part of the group audio

jack audio.conf is not disabled

so my question now is, is mint 18 incompattible with POL or could this be another issue ?

yes it appears POL does not register the winasio.dll in Mint 18

updated - Dec 2018

This still seems to be a problem in Mint 18.3 , it will not register the wineasio dll

does anyone know how to register the wineasio in the install components tab as everytime i try to install it will not register
