Following the request of some people ...

Here's the list of what will be added to PlayOnLinux, by priority order :
- Private Message system [Done]
- Profile page [Done]
- A Search fonction [Done]
- Last people to have posted on the forum and the topic [Done]
- A page where everyone will be able to upload their scripts. The script writers will be able to validate them. These scripts will be accessible in version 1.7 from PlayOnLinux [Done]
- A page where everyone will be able to submit games [Done]
- Remake the registration page
- RSS Flux [Done]
- Improve the news system [Done]
- Create a page to learn how to make its own script.
- Create a Debian & Ubuntu repository for PlayOnLinux [Done]
- Create the similar project "WorkOnLinux" which would be the same, but rather aimed to use softwares like Macromedia Studio, Photoshop, Office 2003, Notepad++ and others [Done]

Things that we would like to do :

The things that we could plan to do (But later, well later) :
- Translate the site in English - The script is already translated.

Hey I was just going to suggest that the forums support English speakers better, but it seems you've got that in the works. I don't speak French very well but I can get around fairly easily, I think I'd be able to translate it for you if you'd like.

I might be dumb, but I still can't find the "Search" fonction on the site.

Btw, si vous chercher quelqu'un pour vous aider a traduire du francais vers l'anglais, je pourrais vous aider. Pensez-y!

Your video card : GeForce 8800 GT/PCI/SSE2
Your distribution : Ubuntu
Your distribution version : 8.04
Wine version installed : wine-1.0
Wine version used by PlayOnLinux : wine-1.0

Make a Script to download and install the Adobe Photoshop CS2 from Adobe.

I make a .deb with Photoshop CS2 it decompress it in /tmp and run with Wine, Quick and Dirty,
the systems cleans up at boot the /tmp and all is good, but i like more the POL way.

The application is fine... what really should get priority is the usage of the program: e.g. CONTENT

The program is created to easily install and run windows games, while you can pimp the app all you want (glad IRC got removed!) the priority is CONTENT of the program, so that everyone can easily play the games they want.

1. Finalize specifications of the .pol script, they change too much
2. Make decent documentation in ENGLISH so that people can create a lot of nice installation scripts
3. Make publishing to the repository nicer, the only way I know is through this forum...
4. Quality
- Give the program/game the correct icon
- Give it a correct description in the repo (how can we do that? almost everything is empty)
- Give it a correct screenshot (how can we do that? almost everything is empty)

We should really make more (and BETTER) scripts.. the more content, the better. thats what gives this app its value!

I agree with you

1. Finalize specifications of the .pol script, they change too much

Quote from THAiSi

.pol files are not script but packages for PlayOnLinux

2. Make decent documentation in ENGLISH so that people can create a lot of nice installation scripts

Quote from THAiSi

It exists

3. Make publishing to the repository nicer, the only way I know is through
this forum...

Quote from THAiSi

That's wrong, you have a "scripts" link at the right of the website

4. Quality
- Give the program/game the correct icon
- Give it a correct description in the repo (how can we do that? almost everything is empty)
- Give it a correct screenshot (how can we do that? almost everything is empty)

Quote from THAiSi

I agree that the .deb packages are not very clean

We should really make more (and BETTER) scripts.. the more content, the better. thats what gives this app its value!

I don't think he means the .deb packages.
I think he means when you go into PlayOnLinux and choose Install and get the list of all programs/games.

I have not found in the documentation how to create a dosbox script, is documentation for it on the way?
THAiSi Wednesday 3 December 2008 at 16:00

I don't want to create new scripts now (did some for Sam and max season1 though)

but I would like to submit icons / descriptions for existing games.. how can I do that? (that are listed in the repository
Quentin PÂRIS Wednesday 3 December 2008 at 16:54
Quentin PÂRISAnonymous

The icons, send them to me by mail

The descriptions, send them to the author of the script
THAiSi Thursday 4 December 2008 at 12:30
THAiSiAnonymous

That's exactly what I mean, the content is to centralized in management, I need to contact you for icons, and every specific author of a script for a description... Do you think wikipedia would be as great as it is now with that structure?

Can't someone make a webinterface and allow logged in users to edit the scripts and those changes are checked and approved by a team of maintainers and the repo is updated instantly?

Isn't it also better to have a pol package split in to in the script and meta-data part?
Quentin PÂRIS Thursday 4 December 2008 at 18:37
Quentin PÂRISAnonymous

That is impossible.

Wikipedia, it is just information. If somebody write an "rm / -r" in a script ... You know what will happen. We need to be very careful
THAiSi Saturday 6 December 2008 at 8:35
THAiSiAnonymous

1. The install script for the game refers to a "gameID" e.g.: 'steam', 'wow', 'guild-wars'

More information is not in the script part. People like you check the script for illigal behavior.

2. Through a web-interface, the meta-data for this game is sumbitted. This is the data not trivial for the installation script, but makes it complete, e.g.:
- Repository description
- Repository Icon
- Repository screenshot(s)
- Installation wizard side-logo
- Installation wizard top-right logo
- Startup Icon

This way the meta-data could never contain data that should be a security issue.

3. Make users submit these meta data through this website.
You can support this showing statistics (Game descriptions: 50%)
and make a top-contributer list to motivate people to create wizard side images, startup icons and descriptions.

4. When installing a game through the repo, the script and the meta-data merge to create the script as downloaded by the client.
you could use special tags in the install script to mark the position

POL_INSTALL_LOGO = %POL_INSTALL_LOGO%

or whatever.

This way the scripters can purely focus on the scripts, and the entire community can help with the rest.
