Can anyone give me some help with this? I've installed Office 2010 using the beta script, and it seemed to install fine. However, I can't actually open any documents with Word. Word will start up, and I can use the program fine (i.e. typing a new document works). However, if I try to open an existing document, nothing happens. I can navigate to the document fine, but when I select it and hit 'Open', nothing happens. No error message, and definitely no document.
I'm trying to convert my wife to Linux, but she's in school and needs Word, so this is kind of a major setback! Please help!

I can't say I've found a solution to this, but I can corroborate what you're describing - Run Word 2010, select File, Open, select .docx file and nothing happens. Tried running Word 2010 from the command line, and don't see any error message output there either. I'm going to start looking into running a version of Windows on a virtual machine on Ubuntu instead.
The "Finally Office 2010 works in Ubuntu" thread on ubuntuforums.org gave me the same results. But, looking at the PlayOnLinux Office 2010 script (as of today anyways) that's not surprising - they're pretty similar installation details.

Same here (on Ubuntu 11.10). I would like to add a detail: When I try to open an existing document and the file browser opens up, the name of the chosen file is not copied from the appearing list of files in the "open"-box below. Even if I type the name of the file into the box, nothing happens. So maybe this bug has to do with Word's handling of the file browser?
I am really looking forward to a solution of this problem!

I was able to successfully install office 2010. I used ubuntu 12.04 beta 2. WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT they can open files from the Open menu, the three work well. The EXCEL has no apparent error (I do all the basics) the WORD closes when you add a cover sheet to document and POWERPOINT closes by using a trasición or effect on the slide. My pc is Intel E5400 Nvidia 7050. I used the Office 2010 sp1 enterprise disk and the latest version of PlayOnLinux with the test script. I think the program is closed because it depends on other features of Windows that are not installed, it must be something media. Have to investigate that particular error. Edited by santhyego

With the new version of PlayOnLinux (4.0.18), the problem with not being able to open existing documents is gone. Hooray! Hope it stays like this. Thanks to whomever!

Problem seemed to come from msxml3 installer, which did not override wine's dll.
It should be fixed now.

Hi wynnwill,
you wrote: "there was an update in Word when I loaded this morning". How do you get POL/Word to install the updates? When I try to fetch updates via File/Help/Check for updates, Wine Internet Explorer starts (a rather reduced version of IE 6, it seems), but it is impossible for me to configure it (there is no menu bar and no options buttion to make such a bar visible). So I simply do not know how to access Windows Update functions or other options to get updates for Word.
How do you do that without having "true" Windows installed? I am very curious about that.
Apart from that Word 2010 seems to be running rather smoothly - I have just reinstalled it, after POL 4.0.19 for Ubuntu Precise Pangolin came out.

Is it possible to install ServicePack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010 in PlayOnLinux? I tried several times to install it inside the wine-prefix for Office, but in the end there is always an error message (Ubuntu 12.04, POL 4.1.1).
