Hi guys,

I'm a relative noob at Linux, I'm trying to play unreal tornement 3 and I'm not able to get past the splash screen using the installer within playonlinux if I try to start it pressing the 'run' button. I have tried several versions of wine from 1.2xx ,1.4, 1.5.25, 1.8 and a couple of steam cross hack ones.

I have installed core font, vcrun2005, dx9, pretty much everything according to this guidehttp://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/unreal-tournament-3-mods-guide.174/

I am not able to launch it through a separate prefix for steam, I get msrun time errors, iv seen 6064 errors to do with something which I forget exactly what.

How ever I am able to launch and play the game if I go to the miscellaneous tab and open the directory and navigate my way through until I find the .exe for the game and right click and using open with wine programe launcher. The game works fine that way, absolutely fine, just I can't play it by simply clicking run, its rather annoying me.

My hardware is an Acer C720 (Chromebook) with chromeos removed and running Ubuntu 15.04, i3 dual core CPU, Intel hd4400 graphics, 4gb ram. I'm actually quite surprised it runs at all on this hardware but I have hope I can get it to work as the game will load if I go through the directory's and load the exe. If I try to launch it directly through pol it will load the splash screen and either crash with an error or crash without an error

Chances are your Chromebook won't be able to handle the graphics in Unreal Tournament 3.  It might handle Unreal Tournament 2004...  That Intel HD 4400 just might not have enough power to run it, even with the settings lowered.

I'm assuming your Ubuntu 15.04 is a 64-bit operating system.  Did you install any 32-bit libraries to run games and programs?

Hi Booman, thanks for replying. The game actually runs quite well which I'm suprised about. This particular model of Chromebook has an i3 CPU and Intel hd4400 GPU. No where near the best but for the kind of laptop it started out life as its pretty good spec for what it is.

The game will play if I go through a file manager and locate the unreal3.exe file in playonlinux drive/unreal3/c/programfile/steam/steamapps/common/unreal3/binarys and right click and use wine program launcher. I just can't get it launch from the pol GUI menu. It will crash if I try and going through pol and it just seems weird that it won't launch using pol but I can using a file manager.

The virtual drive I created was a 32 bit one, the host PC is 64 bit. I followed a guide, writen by you linked above and I pretty much followed your instructions but applied it to a steam version of the game as my PC doesn't have a CD drive. The packages I installed was direct x9, phsics, vcrun 2005, core fonts . What else do you think I might need? As I say it will work, just not using pol to launch it, only by using wine program loader when I click the exe

Hmm, that is interesting.  Do you know which version of Wine you are using with Wine alone?

I haven't tested Unreal Tournament 3 in a while but I have a feeling Wine 1.8 or Wine 1.8-staging will work.
Normally when I do a Steam installation I will download Steam from the www.steampowered.com website and install it in a New 32-bit virtual drive.  Then I install the libraries mentioned in the guide:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma
  • vcrun2005
  • vcrun2008
  • vcrun2010

Since you already proven it will run with Wine, this means you have the proper 32-bit libraries installed already.

I'm surprised the Intel HD 4400 will run UT3.  That is really impressive for a Chromebook with Linux!  I have an older Chromebook C710 with Intel HD 2000 and it doesn't run much. I can play Torchlight 1 and a lot of old games.

Try those libraries and disable the Steam In Game Overlay as well.  maybe that will help?  If you see any steamwebhelper.exe errors, just click "OK" or "Cancel"  That error just means you can't browse games in the WinSteam.

Il try again later on when I get off work. If it fails il launch it again in debug mode and paste the log. Iv no idea who maintaines the unreal 3 launcher but perhaps you could ping them Booman so they could take a look over, or you might be able to see what pol seems to think is a problem

It never hurts to start over either.  Check out some of our Steam Games like the new Fallout New Vegas.  It walks you through installing Steam and downloading a game.

In the past the "-no-dwrite" command and In Game Overlay used to cause problems, but the new Wine 1.8-staging fixes most of those problems.

No problem.  I'm glad its working now.  Sometimes Wine and Linux are a complete mystery.

Don't forget to mark this thread as solved! Enjoy your games and try some UT3 mods... there are some real good ones.
