Hello.
I was wondering, does the installation process for Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) work on Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10)? I'm not so good at all that, kind of a newb to repositories and such...

well, the process is the same whichever your distrib really, apt-get or even synaptic ... if you're just upgrading from one to the other, pol should still be installed...

I've heard/read though that it might not be a bad thing to leave ibex and keep the heron until the next ubuntu comes around... but then again, what do I know? There's been some issues reported on the forum though concerning that distro

i am still rather new to Linux but am learning a lot.
I found your page and thought.. WOW great idea.
I am on a duel booted system.. the win2k side is corrupting but still has functions.
this is an older Sony Viao laptop ;model : pcg- xg39k
the LINUX side is UBUNTU 8.10 Ibix. Recently installed a week ago. Update has been done.
it doesn't have much for space.. 30 gigs..
I really want to use this PLAY ON LINUX thing.
I did the DEB version download and packaged installed.. but i can not find the thing any place.. I have wine.. which i have NO idea how to use.. and wonders if i should have other things "plug in's" to get the games working. My favorite game is one supported by a thing called CEDEGA.. but i have never been able to get it to work. I do not now have CEDEGA and this is a different system than the one i tried that on.
the Game is Called Masters of Orion 2.
i have no idea where to start.. how to use this.. what is needed with it.. or how to show you more of what is in my system to help out. IF any one wants to help me out.. drop me command code for me to show you.. i'll post it here.
Its not so much THIS Game.. but any game or EXE file that will work.. i want to know how to do the play ON Linux thing. I am going to be helping a family of friends of mine.. set up a DUEL boot soon.. they play some games and i want them to have the best opportunity to do so. Can some one help me with supporting.. what happened to the install.. what do i need to do to PLAY a Game thats made for WINDOWS ON LINUX?
please contact.. thanks .

hi,
the simplest way to install playonlinux is http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html

you could also just use synaptic, all dependencies would be installed at the same time...

as for not finding it? look : menu ----> games ----> playonlinux should be there.

however, I checked out the wine website http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=210 and your game is listed as garbage with the hardy version of Ubuntu, so there is little chance it will work on intrepid ... since Playonlinux is a front end to Wine, if a game doesn't work with wine, it most certainly won't work with playonlinux.

good luck though, don't hesitate to ask if more problems arise ^^

Hi ForestWalkerJoe,

About Masters of Orion 2, it's not impossible to manage to play it but it requires quite complex hacks and given your current (apparent) level of knowledges in Linux, it will be hard (but possible if you are persevering).

About the general method to install a game, see our manual.
Feel free to ask other questions if you need to.

Bye
